National Testing Agency to Conduct JEE Main, NEET UG, CTET, UGC NET

National Testing Agency to Conduct JEE Main, NEET UG, CTET, UGC NET
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will now be responsible for conducting some of the national level entrance examinations, currently being held by other educational bodies. The exams under this new change will be Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main for admission into Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for admission into private and government medical colleges in India, CTET 2018 for teachers and CBSE UGC NET 2018 for lectureship in colleges and universities.
The Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, had mentioned in his 2017-18 Budget speech that a centralized agency will be set up, which will be responsible for conducting various entrance examinations for higher education in the country to bring about uniformity in the standards of the exams. The decision for NTA to conduct these examinations is based on this declaration in his speech.
Presently, the conducting bodies for all these exams are the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The centralization will relieve it of the responsibilities of conducting these entrance examinations as the entire authority will now be handed over to NTA, aided by the central government.
NTA, registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860, will work as an autonomous body. NTA will receive a fund of INR 25 Crore from the central government to start off with its affairs. Its chairperson will be appointed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), along with a board of governors who will be representing the NTA member institutions. The chairperson for NTA will be an educationist and the government hopes that the NTA will become self-maintainable by the second year of its existence.
The changes that will be included with respect to these entrance examinations with NTA coming into action will be major. The first major change is that the entrance examinations such as JEE Main, NEET UG and UGC NET which were conducted once a year, will now be conducted twice a year instead. This step is taken as a lot of students come under the pressure of clearing the examination in one go otherwise, having to wait for another year for the same. This will reduce the pressure holding them down and should definitely show better results.
Another major change is regarding the difficulty level in different sets of paper and across vernacular languages for the same examination. There have been petitions started by the aspirants or the concerned parents and guardians in recent years regarding the same, an additional concern for the Supreme Court. These allegations will be kept under control by NTA which claims to run a smooth admission process and standardizing the difficulty level in all the sets of papers.
